Index Rates
"How much will an index cost?"
Book indexing rates can be quoted by the indexable page, by the entry, by the hour, or by the project, depending upon client preferences. I prefer to charge by the indexable page. This means that I only charge for the pages that are to be included in the index. Blank pages, reference lists, case studies, glossaries, and other back matter are generally discounted. Most books range between $3.00 and $4.50 per indexable page.
Factors affecting rates include:
- subject matter
- audience (professional, researcher, student, general public)
- page size and format
- number of index entries per page
- indexable illustrations, tables, footnotes
- turnaround time. Rush jobs (more than 200 pages per week) may require a rush fee
- number of indexes. Multiple indexes (e.g. author, subject, first line etc.) may require an additional fee
